Shot Numerous Times, This Determined Deer Still Managed to Escape Poachers

WFFT welcomes a resilient deer who made a miraculous escape from poachers.

A deer who was shot several times by poachers and still managed to escape her attackers is now safe and recovering at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT).

Park rangers discovered the injured Sambar deer at Kaeng Krachan National Park, which borders the Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces and is known as Thailand’s largest national park.

Officials from the Department of National Parks contacted WFFT for help with the veterinary care of the deer, thanks to our renowned wildlife hospital and its proximity to the national park.

After being rushed to our wildlife hospital, our veterinary team provided urgent care to the female deer. X-rays of the animal revealed several bullet fragments, which had penetrated the deer’s leg and shattered the bone.

The difficult decision was made to amputate the heavily-injured leg.

Sadly, that means that the deer won’t be able to return to the wild, but she will be able to live the rest of her life in peace and safe from poachers, at WFFT’s Wildlife Rescue Centre.

At the sanctuary, the deer, who we’ve named Sandee, can now roam freely in our protected forest areas alongside other rescue animals.

Sambar deer are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species, with their wild populations in rapid decline. Hunting and poaching have helped drive the decline, with Sambar deer often shot to be eaten or sold as exotic meat.

กวางป่าได้รับการรักษา และฟื้นตัวได้เป็นอย่างดี

กวางป่าที่เพศเมียตัวนี้ชื่อว่า “แสนดี” แสนดีได้ตกเป็นเหยื่อของการพยายามล่าในเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน โดยเจ้าหน้าที่อุทยานฯ พบว่า กวางป่าตัวนี้ได้รับบาดเจ็บจากการถูกยิงที่ขาจำนวนหลายนัด เจ้าหน้าที่กรมอุทยานฯ ได้ประสานให้มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่ารับไว้ดูแลอาการบาดเจ็บ และรักษาบาดแผลจากกระสุนปืนโดยทีมสัตวแพทย์ของมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าที่โรงพยาบาลสัตว์ของมูลนิธิฯ

แต่โชคไม่ดีเท่าที่ควรที่ทีมสัตวแพทย์ เมื่อทีมสัตวแพทย์มีความจำเป็นต้องตัดขาหน้าข้างที่ถูกยิงออกหนึ่งข้าง ซึ่งเท่ากับว่า “แสนดี” จะไม่สามารถกลับไปใช้ชีวิตในป่าได้ดังเดิม

ขณะนี้ “แสนดี” ได้มีชีวิตใหม่อย่างดีร่วมกับเพื่อนกวาง และฝูงนกยูง ภายใต้การดูแลของเจ้าหน้าที่ และทีมสัตวแพทย์ของเราเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว

WFFT is one of South East Asia’s largest animal sanctuaries and cares for over 700 animals. The sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates captive wild animals, and offers a forever home to those who cannot safely be returned to the wild.
