Free Buanoi? Free them all!

On Wednesday the 22nd of February, WFFT’s Founder Edwin Wiek joined a small protest at the Thai Parliament to push for animal welfare law changes and the immediate closure of the infamous PATA zoo. This zoo on top of a shopping mall in central Bangkok keeps Buanoi, the lone single gorilla, many other great apes and monkeys from all over the world, and other endangered and protected wild animals, even though the zoo had its zoo license revoked over 3 years ago.

After living for more than 30 years in a glass and cement enclosure, we feel that Buanoi needs to be moved to a natural environment with grass, trees and other animals to live with, and eventually move to a place with other gorillas.

In addition to the call for freedom of the animals at PATA Zoo, Edwin also pushed for better enforcement of existing wildlife protection laws and a higher budget from the government for the care of injured, dumped and confiscated wild animals under the care of the wildlife department. The annual budget has been cut 20% over the last few years, while the amount of animals under their care has steadily increased.

คืนอิสระให้บัวน้อย

วันพุธที่ 22 กุมภาพันธ์ 66 ที่ผ่านมา คุณเอ็ดวิน วีค ผู้ก่อตั้งมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าได้ร่วมยื่นข้อเรียกร้องที่อาคารรัฐสภา ร่วมกับพันธมิตรด้านการอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่า เพื่อผลักดันให้มีการแก้ไข และบังคับใช้กฎหมายสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ พร้อมเรียกร้องให้มีการปิดสวนสัตว์พาต้าในทันที โดยสวนสัตว์พาต้าแห่งนี้ได้ถูกเพิกถอนใบอนุญาตกิจการสวนสัตว์มากว่า 3 ปีแล้ว ซึ่งสวนสัตว์แห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่บนอาคารสูงกลางกรุงแห่งนี้ ได้ดูแล “บัวน้อย” กอริลล่าเพศเมีย พร้อมด้วยลิงขนาดใหญ่ และลิง และสัตว์ป่าชนิดอื่นๆ อีกมากมายที่มาจากทั่วโลก นอกจากนี้ยังมีสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองอีกหลายชนิด ที่สุ่มเสี่ยงกับการสูญพันธุ์ในไม่ช้า

นับเวลากว่า 30 ปี ที่ “บัวน้อย” ต้องใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในห้องกระจก บนพื้นซีเมนต์อยู่อย่างนั้น ซึ่งเรามีความเห็นว่า “บัวน้อย” จำเป็นต้องได้รับสภาพแวดล้อมที่เหมาะสม ได้รู้จักต้นไม้ ใบหญ้า และสัตว์อื่นๆ หรือแม้กระทั่งต้องย้ายไปอยู่ร่วมกับเพื่อนกอริลล่าตัวอื่นๆ ด้วยเช่นกัน

นอกจากประเด็นกรณีสวนสัตว์พาต้านี้แล้ว คุณเอ็ดวิน วีค ยังเรียกร้องให้มีการบังคับใช้กฎหมายในการคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่าอย่างจริงจัง และเพิ่มงบประมาณภาครัฐในการดูแลสัตว์ป่า โดยเฉพาะในช่วงสถานการณ์โควิดที่ผ่านมา งบประมาณดูแลสัตว์ป่าประจำปีถูกตัดลงกว่า 20 % สวนทางกับจำนวนสัตว์ป่าภายใต้การดูแลของกรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่า และพันธุ์พืช มีเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ส่งผลให้การดูแลสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ป่าภายใต้การดูแลของกรมฯ ลดน้อยลง
