BREAKING NEWS – ELEPHANT CONFISCATION

This beautiful elephant has most likely spent her life being exploited as a logging elephant in Myanmar, before being illegally smuggled into Thailand.

ภาษาไทยด้านล่าง On Sunday the 18th of December, two men were seen taking a female elephant across the Myanmar-Thai border in Huay Yang District, Prachuapkhirikhan province, Thailand. The Royal Thai Border Police and Department of National Parks (DNP) officials then acted and apprehended the two smugglers and confiscated the approximately 30-year-old female elephant.

The two arrested men were Mr. Phongsak Huakaew, a 28-year-old Thai national, and Mr. Muytuya, a 28-year-old Myanmar man. Phongsak was also the owner of the truck. Mr. Phongsak is known to have transported timber and elephants in the past and has a criminal record. Both have been charged by police on account of the illegal crossing of a national border with a protected or reserved wild animal and illegal possession of a protected or reserved wild animal. Mr. Muytuya has also been charged for illegal entry into the Kingdom of Thailand.

The police and DNP reached out to WFFT on the 19th of December to provide urgent care and a safe place for this unfortunate victim of the illegal wildlife trade. With the right facilities, caretakers and veterinary team we were able to help this urgent case at a very short notice.

Our team of keepers and veterinarians are now caring for the highly stressed elephant. The good news is that she seems to have adjusted quickly, after a good night of sleep. She is eating well and seems more relaxed than she was at her arrival last night. Because this poor animal has been confiscated by authorities, she is property of the state and we are unsure how long she will be with us. Nevertheless, we are happy to provide her with the best care possible for as long as needed.

เมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่ 18 ธันวาคม 2565 เจ้าหน้าที่ขณะกำลังปฏิบัติงานพบเห็นชาย 2 คน ได้นำช้างเพศเมียข้ามจากชายแดนไทยพม่าเข้ามาทาง อ.ห้วยทราย จ.ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจตระเวนชายแดนและเจ้าหน้าที่กรมอุทยานฯ จึงแสดงตัวขอตรวจค้นและจับกุมชายทั้งสองและยึดช้างเพศเมีย อายุประมาณ 30 ปี เนื่องจากพบว่าช้างเชือกดังกล่าวไม่มีตั๋วรูปพรรณช้างและใบเคลื่อนย้ายสัตว์

ทราบชื่อผู้ต้องหาทั้ง2 คน คือนายพงษ์ศักดิ์ ห้วยแก้ว อายุ 28 ปี ชาว ต.เขาล้าน อ.ทับสะแก จ.ประจวบฯ สัญชาติไทย และ นายมิวตูยะ อายุ 28 ปี สัญชาติเมียนมา นายพงษ์ศักดิ์ยังถูกพบว่าเป็นเจ้าของรถบรรทุกที่ใช้ลักลอบขนช้าง และเคยมีการรับจ้างขนส่งไม้และช้างมาก่อน รวมถึงเคยเป็นผู้ต้องหาในคดีลักทรัพย์ ทั้งสองถูกจับกุมและโดนแจ้งข้อกล่าวหาว่าตาม พ.ร.บ.ศุลกากรฯ, พ.ร.บ.คุ้มครองสัตว์ป่าฯ, พ.ร.บ.โรคระบาดสัตว์, พ.ร.บ.คนเข้าเมืองฯ ได้แก่ร่วมกันนำหรือพาสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองหรือสัตว์สงวนเข้ามาในราชอาณาจักรโดยไม่ผ่านพิธีการทางศุลกากรและไม่ได้รับอนุญาต, ร่วมกันมีไว้ในครอบครองซึ่งสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองหรือสัตว์สงวนโดยไม่ได้รับอนุญาต,ร่วมกันนำเข้าหรือส่งออกสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองหรือสัตว์สงวนเข้ามาในราชอาณาจักรโดยไม่ได้รับอนุญาต และแจ้งข้อกล่าวหาเพิ่มเติมแก่นายมิวตูยะ คือเป็นบุคคลต่างด้าวเข้ามาในราชอาณาจักรโดยไม่ได้รับอนุญาต

ทั้งนี้เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจตระเวนชายแดนและเจ้าหน้าที่กรมอุทยานฯ ได้ทำการประสานมายังมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าเมื่อวันที่ 19 ธันวาคมนี้ เพื่อขอให้ทางเราช่วยเหลือดูแล และจัดหาพื้นที่ปลอดภัยให้แก่ช้างพังโชคร้ายที่ตกเป็นเหยื่อของการค้าสัตว์ป่าเชือกนี้ ทางเรามีความพร้อมสำหรับสถานที่รองรับ พร้อมทั้งทีมสัตว์แพทย์และผู้ดูแลช้าง จึงทำให้มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าสามารถช่วยเหลือช้างและสัตว์ในกรณีฉุกเฉินนี้ได้อย่างทันท่วงที

ขณะนี้ทีมสัตว์แพทย์ ควาญช้าง ร่วมกันดูแลช้างพังที่ค่อนข้างเครียดเชือกนี้อย่างเต็มความสามารถ แต่ข่าวดีคือช้างปรับตัวได้ค่อนข้างดี หลังจากได้พักผ่อนอย่างเต็มที่เมื่อคืนนี้ กินอาหารได้ดี และมีท่าทีผ่อนคลายลงมากเมื่อเทียบกับตอนที่เพิ่งมาถึง ช้างที่น่าสงสารเชือกนี้ถูกเจ้าหน้าที่ยึดมาจากการกระทำความผิด ดังนั้นช้างจึงตกเป็นสมบัติของแผ่นดินตามกฎหมาย มูลนิธิฯ จึงไม่สามารถตอบได้ว่าช้างจะอยู่กับเราได้ถึงเมื่อไหร่ แต่ไม่ว่าอย่างไรก็ตาม ทางเรายินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ได้มีส่วนช่วยดูแลช้างเชือกนี้ และเราจะทำให้ดีที่สุดตราบเท่าที่เราจะทำได้
