Now Safe: 9 Rare Hornbills and 3 Endangered Gibbons Arrive at WFFT

Suspected to have all been caught from the wild, the young animals are now receiving specialist care by our vet team.

An anonymous caller has handed over nine rare hornbills and three endangered gibbons to WFFT.

The animals are all suspected to have been illegally caught from the wild, and were likely destined for the exotic pet trade or to be used in animal cafés.

Such fears are supported by reports that WFFT have received about wild animals being poached in Myanmar and then being smuggled via sea routes to Japan .

Thankfully these young animals are now safe and are receiving the specialist care that they need. After an initial health check by our vet team, each animal is now being hand fed a healthy diet to help them regain their strength.

WFFT provides sanctuary to over 700 animals. Without your support, we cannot rescue and care for so many. With every new arrival, we must provide them with a special, species-specific home, diet and care.

The three white-handed gibbons are endangered on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. There are two species among the nine hornbills: the Wreathed hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) and the Great hornbill (Buceros bicornis). Both species are listed as ‘vulnerable’. We are hopeful that we can collaborate with the Thai government’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), to work together on a rehab & release project for the hornbills so that they can once again fly free.

จากรายงานหลาย ๆ แหล่งชี้ชัดไปในทางเดียวกันถึงแนวโน้มของสัตว์ป่าที่ถูกล่าจากประเทศเพื่อนบ้านอย่างพม่า ลักลอบเข้าไทย เพื่อลักลอบส่งทางทะเลไปยังประเทศญี่ปุ่น โชคดีที่ตอนนี้ทั้ง 12 ชีวิตปลอดภัย และได้รับการดูแลอย่างดีจากทีมสัตว์แพทย์ของเรา หลังจากผ่านการตรวจสุขภาพเบื้องต้นแล้ว สัตว์แต่ละตัวจะได้รับอาหารตามโภชนาการของชนิดพันธุ์เพื่อช่วยฟื้นฟูร่างกายและความแข็งแรง

ชะนีมือขาวทั้ง 3 ตัว อยู่ในบัญชี “สัตว์ใกล้สูญพันธุ์” ตามบัญชีแดง IUCN สำหรับนกเงือก 9 ตัวนั้น มี 2 ชนิด คือ นกเงือกกรามช้าง และนกกาฮัง ซึ่งทั้งคู่เป็นชนิดพันธุ์ที่อยู่ในบัญชี “มีแนวโน้มใกล้สูญพันธุ์”

มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าหวังว่าเราจะมีโอกาสได้ร่วมมือกับกรมอุทยานฯ เพื่อช่วยเหลือ และทำงานร่วมกันหากเป็นไปได้ในโครงการฟื้นฟูและปล่อยนกเงือกและชะนีกลับคืนสู่ป่า ให้ได้รับอิสระและได้อาศัยอยู่ในธรรมชาติอีกครั้ง
