New arrivals: Lek and Jor – rescued coconut monkeys.

ภาษาไทยด้านล่าง Last week, WFFT Founder and Director Edwin Wiek travelled to the famous tourist island of Koh Samui to rescue two more monkeys from the coconut industry. These intelligent animals spent their lives (one for more than 20 years), chained up and forced to climb trees to harvest hundreds of coconuts at a time. 

Their owner surrendered them to WFFT because he wanted them to have a better life. Never again will Jor and Lek have to be chained up and forced to work.

Shortly after arriving at WFFT, both Jor and Lek had their metal collars removed and had a full health check. Jor is the elder of the two at more than 20 years old. He was found to be underweight and needs significant dental care. Lek is younger and has an old wound to his chest.

They will remain in our quarantine for a short period whilst they also receive the medical attention they need, before being moved to larger enclosures. The hope is to integrate each rescued coconut monkey into groups where they can live in open-air fields. However, these animals have spent many years living very unnatural lives. So, it may take time for them to adjust and to learn to live like monkeys.

We are very grateful to PETA Asia for supporting us in these rescues and in building enclosures to house rescued wildlife like Jor and Lek, as well as to Ampol Foods for their sponsorship.

ต้อนรับสมาชิกใหม่: เล็กและจ๋อลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าว

สัปดาห์ที่แล้วผู้ก่อตั้งมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า คุณเอ็ดวิน วีค ได้เดินทางไปเกาะสมุยเพื่อช่วยเหลือลิงกังสองตัวจากอุตสาหกรรมมะพร้าว สัตว์ฉลาดอย่างลิงกังทั้งสองตัวกลับต้องมาใช้ทั้งชีวิตของพวกเขา (หนึ่งในสองตัวนี้มีอายุมากกว่า 20ปี) เพื่อปีนเก็บมะพร้าวคราวละหลายร้อยลูก นอกเหนือเวลางานก็จะถูกล่ามโซ่ไว้ตลอดเวลา 

เจ้าของเล็กและจ๋อต้ดสินใจที่จะให้เราดูแลทั้งสองต่อเพราะอยากให้มีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี และนับจากนี้ชีวิตของทั้งสองจะเปลี่ยนไป

เพราะเล็กและจ๋อจะไม่ต้องถูกบังคับให้ทำงานให้เก็บมะพร้าวหรือถูกล่ามโซ่อีกแล้ว 

หลังจากที่เดินทางมาถึงมูลนิธิฯ สิ่งแรกคือเราทำคือตัดห่วงคอของเล็กและจ๋อออกแล้วจึงตรวจสุขภาพ จ๋อนั้นอายุมากกว่า 20 ปีแล้ว เราพบว่าจ๋อมีน้ำหนักต่ำกว่าเกณฑ์และต้องรีบจัดการกับสุขภาพในช่องปากอย่างเร่งด่วน เล็กซึ่งอายุน้อยกว่ามีแผลที่หน้าอก 

ตอนนี้ทั้งสองอยู่ในโซนกักกันและจะอยู่โซนนี้สักระยะหนึ่งเพื่อที่ทางเราจะได้ดูแลสุขภาพของทั้งสองได้ หลังจากนั้นเราจะย้ายไปอยู่กรงด้านนอกที่ใหญ่ขึ้น เราหวังว่าเราจะทำให้ลิงเก็บมะพร้าวที่เราช่วยเหลือมาแต่ละตัวอยู่รวมกันได้เป็นฝูงในสนามลิงในวันข้างหน้า แต่ถึงอย่างไรก็ตามสัตว์ป่าเหล่านี้เคยใช้ชีวิตผิดเพี้ยนไปจากวิถีสัตว์ป่า ดังนั้นเราจึงต้องให้เวลากับสัตว์ในการปรับตัวและเรียนรู้ที่จะใช้ชีวิตอย่างลิง
