Next Stage of Rehabilitation for Drug-Addicted Gibbon, Jub Jib

Jub Jib’s story is heartbreaking. For 15 years, she endured life as a pet, misguidedly given human antidepressants by her ‘owners,’ causing severe mental and physical damage. When she arrived at WFFT, she looked like a geriatric gibbon, despite being in the prime of her life.

Addicted to the medication, Jub Jib couldn’t move or behave as a gibbon naturally should. Thankfully, over time, she was weaned off the drugs and has gradually started to regain her natural behaviour. Recently, Jub Jib was moved to a solitary gibbon enclosure, where we assessed her strength, behaviour, and mobility.

We’re thrilled to announce that she’s doing so well that she has now moved into one of our gibbon forest enclosures! Even more exciting, we’re trying to match her with one of our male gibbons, Nee, who also has special needs—he is partially blind. We’ll keep you updated on their progress!

Jub Jib’s story is a powerful reminder of the damage and cruelty inflicted on wildlife by the pet trade. Thanks to our supporters, her life has drastically improved.
