Isolated for 35 Years – Canoe the City Chimp

Yesterday we achieved something that just a few weeks ago seemed impossible. After weeks of discussions with the owner of a chimpanzee housed at a closed school in central Bangkok, we were finally able to free Canoe. WFFT first heard about Canoe years ago from an ex-student of the school and we were unable to secure his freedom at that time.

Canoe was caught from the wilds of Africa and imported into Thailand in the early 1980’s as a baby. He was sold to a school the central Bangkok where he has resided for the past 35 years. We learned yesterday from one of the members of the WFFT Board, who went to the school, that she has first met Canoe 35 years ago when she was 10 years old. We were all surprised to find out he had spent 10 more years than we were initially thought in this barren cage.

The concrete world he knew was being torn down around him. The land that the school was located on is being cleared for sale after being repossessed so Canoe needed a home urgently. There were large holes in the cage which needed repairing while the veterinary team performed a health and monitored him while under sedation. His tiny home was surrounded by plastic bottles and piles of other trash.

The decision was made to keep him in his current enclosure for the big move and use it as a temporary home until we can build him a new habitat at WFFT. WFFT’s founder Edwin, and his keeper Nueng spent the 3-hour journey to WFFT with him on the truck.

For now, Canoe is settling in well. His caretaker travelled with him to WFFT from Bangkok and will stay with us for some time to ease the transition into a new exciting world.

A special thank you goes to the family who were finally willing to allow his transfer to a better place, Khun Peh and Dr. Kanittha Phetudomsinsuk, who has been providing veterinary care to Canoe for the past 11 years.

Canoe new home will cost $10,000.00. We plan to create a safe habitat which will be a whole new world in comparison to where he has spent the last 35 years.

We are still seeking funds for general running costs of our operations along with funds to create a fantastic new home for Canoe.

“แคนู” ชิมแปนซีเมืองกรุง ลิงผู้โดดเดี่ยวมานานถึง 35 ปี

เมื่อวันที่ 23 มีนาคม 2563 ทางมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าได้ช่วยเหลือแคนู ชิมแปนซีได้สำเร็จ ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้เราแทบจะหมดหวังไปแล้ว ในช่วงหลายสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาทางมูลนิธิฯได้พูดคุยกับเจ้าของชิมแปนซีที่ถูกเลี้ยงไว้ภายในโรงเรียนที่ปิดไปแล้วแห่งหนึ่งใจกลางกรุงเทพ มูลนิธิ ฯ รับรู้เรื่องราวของแคนูครั้งแรกหลายปีก่อนจากศิษย์เก่าของโรงเรียน ซึ่ง ณ เวลานั้นเราไม่สามารถช่วยปลดปล่อยแคนูได้เลย

แคนูถูกจับมาจากป่าในทวีปแอฟริกาตั้งแต่ยังเด็ก และถูกนำเข้ามาในประเทศไทยช่วงต้นทศวรรษ 2520 แคนูถูกขายให้กับเจ้าของโรงเรียนดังกล่าว และถูกเลี้ยงไว้ในกรงภายในโรงเรียนตั้งแต่นั้นมาเป็นเวลาถึง 35 ปี เมื่อวานนี้เราได้รู้จากหนึ่งในคณะกรรมการของมูลนิธิ ฯ และยังเคยเป็นศิษย์เก่าของโรงเรียนดังกล่าวว่าเธอได้เจอกับแคนูเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อ 35 ปีที่แล้วซึ่งตอนนั้นเธออายุได้ 10 ขวบ นั่นหมายความว่า แคนู ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในกรงเก่า ๆ นั้น มากกว่าที่เราคิดไว้ อีกถึง 10 ปี

โลกของตึกคอนกรีตที่แคนูเห็นมาตั้งแต่เล็กรอบ ๆ ตัว กำลังอยู่ในระหว่างการรื้อถอน เจ้าของที่ดินของโรงเรียนกำลังรื้อซากตึกทิ้งเพราะต้องขายที่แปลงนั้น จึงเป็นเหตุผลว่าทำไมแคนูต้องถูกย้ายออกโดยด่วน ตอนที่เราได้พบกับแคนูนั้น เราเห็นว่ากรงของแคนูผุพังและมีช่องขนาดใหญ่หลายช่องที่ต้องซ่อมแซมก่อนจะทำการขนย้าย ในขณะเดียวกันทีมสัตวแพทย์ของมูลนิธิ ฯ ก็ได้วางยาสลบเพื่อที่จะตรวจสภาพร่างกายของแคนู กรงของชิมแปนซีตัวนี้เต็มไปด้วยขวดพลาสติกและกองขยะ

ทางเราจึงลงความเห็นว่าแคนูจะถูกเคลื่อนย้ายมาที่มูลนิธิฯ พร้อมกับกรงเดิมที่เคยอยู่ และจะยังอยู่ในกรงนี้ชั่วคราว จนกว่าทางเราจะสามารถสร้างที่อยู่ใหม่ภายในมูลนิธิ ฯ ผู้ก่อตั้งมูลนิธิฯ คุณเอ็ดวิน วีค และพี่เลี้ยงดูแคนู คุณหนึ่ง รวมถึงตัวแคนู ทั้งสามใช้เวลาเดินทางร่วมกันมาในรถบรรทุก เป็นเวลา 3 ชั่วโมงจนถึงมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า

ตอนนี้แคนูค่อนข้างปรับตัวได้ดี และคุณหนึ่งเองจะอยู่ที่นี่กับเราสักพักเพื่อให้แคนูมีเวลาปรับตัวให้คุ้นชินกับสถานที่ใหม่ในโลกใบใหม่

ทางมูลนิธิฯ ขอขอบคุณ ครอบครัวเจ้าของเดิมของแคนู ที่สุดท้ายแล้วยินดีส่งมอบแคนูให้มาอาศัยในสถานที่ที่ดีกว่าเดิม ขอขอบคุณ คุณเป้ และ ดร. ขนิษฐา เพชรอุดมสินสุข ผู้ช่วยทำการดูแลแคนูถึง 11 ปี

สำหรับบ้านหลังใหม่ของแคนูนั้น จะมีงบประมาณค่าใช้จ่ายอยู่ที่ 320,000 บาท ทางมูลนิธิฯ ต้องการที่จะสร้างบ้านหลังใหม่ และโลกใบใหม่ที่ปลอดภัยให้กับแคนู ซึ่งจะต่างจากโลกใบเดิมที่เคยอาศัยมานานถึง 35 ปี

ทางเรายังคงต้องการการบริจาคจากท่านเพื่อสนับสนุนการดูแลสัตว์ป่าของมูลนิธิฯ รวมถึงสมทบทุนสร้างบ้านหลังใหม่ให้กับแคนู
