International Primate Day 2021 – King’s story

To mark this day, we want to share King’s story – then and now. Many of our ex-volunteers will know this beloved white-handed gibbon at WFFT. But not everyone knows his story… 

We rescued King in 2017 from a monkey show venue in Southern Thailand. He was stolen from the wild after watching his mother get murdered, and then sold as a photo prop. Once he became too big and aggressive to be exploited for photos with tourists, he spent 12 YEARS in a 1m2 enclosure. There was nothing to climb, no other gibbons to interact with, and just a concrete floor to sleep on. This life is worlds apart from how a gibbon should live. He was beaten repeatedly, as evidenced by the injuries and scars on his head (as shown in one of the photos). Back then, he was extremely small, emaciated and malnourished because of the awful diet they fed him. 

Since being at WFFT, his health has markedly improved. We’ve tried to match him with a few female companions, but he hasn’t met his one and only yet, although we are working on it. We recently put fire hoses in his enclosure to encourage natural behaviours and of course, for fun. Once King finds his queen, our hope in the future is that they could successfully live together on a gibbon island, and try to discover their wild instincts.

We hope King’s tale serves to make people think twice before taking a photo with a gibbon – or any primate or wild animal. A gibbon selfie equates to a lifetime of suffering for them. จากวันนั้นจนถึงวันนี้….. อาสาสมัครของเรามากมายรู้จักและจำชะนีมือขาวแสนน่ารักตัวนี้ได้ แต่ใช่ว่าทุกคนจะรู้เรื่องราวของคิง

เราช่วยเหลือคิงในปี 2560 จากสถานที่แสดงลิงแห่งหนึ่งในภาคใต้ คิงถูกขโมยมาจากป่าหลังจากที่ต้องเห็นนายพรานฆ่าแม่ของตัวเอง แล้วคิงถูกขายต่อเพื่อให้นักท่องเที่ยวถ่ายรูป คิงเคยมีพฤติกรรมก้าวร้าวอย่างมากหลังจากที่ถูกบังคับให้ถ่ายรูปกับนักท่องเที่ยววันแล้ววันเล่า เมื่อไม่ได้ถ่ายรูปคิงจะถูกขังไว้ในกรงขนาดกว้างยาวแค่ 1 เมตร ในกรงที่ว่างเปล่านั้นไม่มีสิ่งใดให้คิงห้อยโหน ไม่มีเพื่อนชะนีตัวอื่น มีแค่พื้นปูนให้นอน ชีวิตแบบนี้ไม่มีอะไรเทียบได้กับชีวิตที่ชะนีควรจะมี คิงโดนตีซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่าหลักฐานชัดเจนคือบาดแผลและรอยแผลเป็นบนหน้าผากและหัวของคิง ในตอนนั้นคิงมีขนาดตัวที่เล็กมาก ผอมแห้งและขาดสารอาหารเพราะอาหารผิดประเภทที่คิงได้รับอย่างต่อเนื่อง 

ตั้งแต่คิงมาอยู่กับเรา สุขภาพของคิงค่อย ๆ ดีขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด เราพยายามหาเพื่อนสาวให้คิงอยู่หลายครั้ง แต่คิงยังไม่เจอสาวที่คิงชื่นชอบและเราจะพยายามต่อไปค่ะ ในตอนนี้เราเพิ่งจะทำของเล่นจากสายดับเพลิงเพื่อให้คิง สร้างเสริมพฤติกรรมตามธรรมชาติและเพื่อให้คิงมีอะไรเล่นอย่างสนุกสนาน ในวันข้างหน้าที่คิงได้เจอผู้สาวถูกใจเป็นคู่ชีวิต เราหวังว่าคิงจะได้ย้ายไปอยู่บนเกาะชะนีกับคู่ และได้ค้นพบสัญชาติญาณสัตว์ป่ามากขึ้นไปอีกขั้น

เราหวังว่าเรื่องราวของคิงจะทำให้ผู้คนได้คิดอีกครั้ง และอีกครั้งก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจถ่ายรูปกับชะนี การสนับสนุน ส่งเสริมถ่ายรูปกับชะนี1ครั้งเท่ากับท่านหยิบยื่นความทารุณตลอดชีวิตให้กับสัตว์เหล่านั้น สำหรับคิงท่านสามารถช่วยเราช่วยให้คิงมีชีวิตที่ดีขึ้นได้ เพียงแค่ 500 บาท ท่านสามารถช่วยเหลือดูแลคิงได้ 1 เดือน ท่านสามารถร่วมบริจาคได้ที่ ธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์ ชื่อบัญชี มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า 708-208-0866 สาขาท่ายาง ออมทรัพย์
