France – Another Poor Victim of the Exotic Pet Trade

สัปดาห์นี้มีครอบครัวจากกรุงเทพเดินทางมาที่WFFTพร้อมกับลูกลิงกระรอก (Squirrel monkey) ชื่อ” ฟร๊อง” พวกเขาได้ซื้อฟร๊องมาจากฟาร์มสัตว์แปลกขณะนั้นอายุเพียงแค่ 6 สัปดาห์ ก่อนซื้อเจ้าของได้ศึกษาข้อมูลอย่างถี่ถ้วนและเตรียมอุปกรณ์ทุกอย่างที่ลิงอย่างฟร๊องจำเป็นต้องใช้ในชีวิตไม่ว่าจะเป็น อาหาร ผ้าห่ม ไฟให้ความอบอุ่น วิตามิน แต่เมื่อรับมาเลี้ยงจริงๆ ทำให้พวกเขารู้ว่า ฟร๊อง ต้องการความดูเเลเป็นพิเศษสูงกว่านั้น ต้องป้อนนมทุก 3 ชั่วโมง ต้องรับแสงแดดที่มีทั้งUVA UVB ต้องควบคุมอุณหภูมิในห้องให้เหมาะสมและนั่นเริ่มทำให้เขาตระหนักว่าการนำสัตว์ป่ามาเลี้ยงในวิถีชีวิตเดียวกับมนุษย์นั้นไม่เหมาะสมอย่างยิ่งและยังทำให้สุขภาพของเจ้าของย่ำแย่ลงอีกด้วย

เขาจึงตัดสินใจติดต่อWFFTเพื่อหาบ้านหลังใหม่ที่เหมาะสมดีกว่าขายให้คนอื่นไปเลี้ยงต่อ ขณะนี้ฟร๊องอายุเพียงแค่2เดือนซึ่งในธรรมชาติยังจำเป็นต้องการความดูแลจากแม่และครอบครัวอยู่ ทีมสัตวแพทย์ของเราจึงจำเป็นต้องดูแลลอด 24 ชั่วโมง เราอาจจะให้ความอบอุ่นได้ไม่เท่าแม่ลิงของฟร๊องแต่เราจะพยายามดูแลฟร๊องให้ได้ใช้ชีวิตใกล้เคียงกับธรรมชาติที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้

หลายปีที่ผ่านมาจำนวนฟาร์มเพาะสัตว์แปลกได้เพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ สัตว์ป่าที่ไม่ใช่สัตว์พื้นเมืองในประเทศเเละไม่ได้ติดอยู่ในบัญชี CITES 1 เเละ 2 นั้นไม่มีกฎหมายคุ้มครองจากรัฐบาลไทยดังนั้นเราจึงเห็นจำนวนที่ไม่สิ้นสุดของลิงจากเเอฟฟริกาหรือลิงโลกใหม่ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ลิงมาโมเสท ลิงแทมมารีน ลิงคีปูนจี เเละอีกมายซื้อขายได้ตามตลาดสัตว์เลื้อยคลานออนไลน์ สัตว์ป่าเหล่านี้ส่วนใหญ่จะถูกนำเข้ามาประเทศไทยหรือเพาะพันธุ์ในประเทศไทยอย่างถูกต้องตามกฎหมาย ลิงจากทวีปเเอฟฟริกาส่วนใหญ่จะถูกนำเข้ามาจากประเทศคองโกเเละเเอฟฟริกาใต้ ส่วนลิงจากอเมริกาใต้จะถูกนำเข้ามาจากซูรินามหรือทวีปยุโรป

สัตว์ป่าอย่างฟร๊องถูกพลัดพรากจากแม่ตั้งแต่ยังเล็กเพื่อนำมาขายเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง ยิ่งเล็กยิ่งน่ารักยิ่งทำให้อยากซื้อ เเละนั้นจะทำให้ส่งผลกระทบต่อทั้งสุขภาพจิตเเละร่างกายของพวกเขาได้ง่ายๆหากผู้ซื้อไม่มีความรู้ที่มากพอ การนำสัตว์ป่ามาเลี้ยงถือว่าเป็นการทำลายระบบนิเวศอย่างหนึ่งอย่าสนับสนุนการเอาสัตว์ป่ามาเลี้ยงเลยนะครับ

This week a family travelled from Bangkok to WFFT with a very young Common Squirrel monkey (Saimiri.) named ‘France’. The owner told us he bought France from an exotic pet farm in Thailand; at that time (2 weeks ago) he was only six weeks old. Before buying him, the owner had researched and prepared all the necessities such as specific foods and milk, blankets, particular heat light bulbs, and vitamins. Unfortunately the shopping list did not, nor could it, include France’s real mother.

The owner did not expect France would require such specialist care 24/7. They began to realize keeping a wild animal as a pet is inappropriate and decided to do the right thing by finding a more suitable home. The owner contacted WFFT to find a more suitable home rather than sell France to another pet owner. France is only two months old, at this age he wound still be fully dependent on the care of his parents and other family members. He will require 24-hour care for at least the next few months. We will not be able to replace France’s mother but luckily our team has vast experience in caring for infant primates so he will have a new chance at a better life.

Over the last few years, we have seen an increase in exotic wildlife farms in Thailand. Wild animals that are not native to Thailand and not listed in CITES appendix 1 or 2 are offered no protection under Thai law. We see an endless number of both African and New World Primates, such as marmosets, tamarins, mangabeys, mona monkeys and many more being sold at pet markets and online. These wild animals are often imported into Thailand with the correct permits or bred in captivity and then sold legally into the exotic pet trade. Most of the African species are imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa, while the South American species are commonly imported from Suriname and Europe.

Infant animals are ripped away from their mothers at a few days old, the younger the baby the more appealing the buyer. This not only affects their health but also psychological wellbeing. Keeping any form of wildlife as a pet is aiding in the destruction of natural ecosystems across the globe. Please do not support wildlife trade. Keep Wildlife Wild and Not as Pets.
