Four rescued coconut monkeys: better lives ahead

Sadly, monkeys are exploited to pick coconuts in Thailand. It is a very old and controversial trade. Many are bred or poached from the wild for this purpose, then purchased by people to work for them, as their coconut pickers. They are trained as youngsters and never know much else of life other than being chained up, often around the neck, when they are not climbing trees and picking hundreds of coconuts for their owners.

A well-trained monkey can harvest hundreds, up to 800 coconuts per day. It is exhausting work for these often-underfed prisoners.

BUT, times are changing and more owners are giving up these monkeys to give them a better life. Kim, Odd, Muern and Saen were all surrendered to WFFT by their owners – knowing that these intelligent animals deserve a better life.

Sadly, others may dump monkeys at temples or leave them chained up for years, or even release them into a forest – which is most likely a death sentence for these monkeys who have no idea how to survive in the wild.

But Kim, Odd, Muern and Saen’s owners did the right thing and gave them a second chance in life. After their quarantine periods, we recently moved these handsome males, who are now living without a chain around their neck, possibly for the first time in their lives, to new enclosures to continue their rehabilitation. They are learning what it is to be a monkey again.

It is our hope they can be introduced to groups of their own species in the future. But after years of suffering, with little or no interaction with their own species, we cannot expect a miracle to happen in just a few months.

Sadly, there are likely thousands of coconut monkeys still ‘working’ in Thailand. We must work to educate both children and adults that this is not fair for these highly sociable, wild animals. No animal should be poached or bred for a miserable existence. We are calling on and working with the coconut industry to take action and take responsibility for the harm done to monkeys.

With the right licenses, it is not illegal in Thailand for monkeys to be owned and used to pick coconuts. Therefore, it is only when laws change or an owner decides to surrender the animal that we can step in to help. We hope that in the not-so-distant future, this old but cruel tradition will die out. All wild animals need protecting, not exploiting.

Currently, there is a long list of other coconut monkeys waiting to be rescued. Without enclosures and fields to house them, food to feed them, and medicines to treat them, we cannot rescue more.

ช่างน่าเศร้าในประเทศไทยมีลิงกังจำนวนมากถูกนำมาใช้แสวงหาประโยชน์ การใช้ลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าวเกิดขึ้นมานานและมีการโต้เถียงกันมากถึงการใช้แรงงานสัตว์ป่า ลิงกังหลายชีวิตถูกล่าออกมากจากป่าหรือเพาะพันธุ์เพื่อเลี้ยง ถูกซื้อขาย แลกเปลี่ยนในกลุ่มผู้ใช้งานลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าว ลิงกังเหล่านี้จะถูกฝึกตั้งแต่ยังเด็ก และจะไม่รู้จักเลยว่าชีวิตลิงคืออะไร นอกจากต้องเก็บมะพร้าวครั้งละหลายร้อยลูกแล้ว ชีวิตที่เหลือคือการถูกล่ามซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะถูกล่ามโซ่ไว้ที่คอ

ในแต่ละครั้งลิงกังที่ถูกฝึกมาอย่างดีจะสามารถเก็บมะพร้าวได้วันละหลายร้อยลูกจนถึงวันละพันกว่าลูก

แต่สิ่งนี้กำลังจะถูกเปลี่ยน เจ้าของลิงกังหลายคนต้องการปลดระวางลิงของพวกเขาเพื่อให้มีชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น ดังเช่น คิม อ๊อด หมื่น และแสน ลิงกัง 4 ตัวนี้เจ้าของมอบให้มูลนิธิฯ ดูแลต่อเพื่อชีวิตที่ดีขึ้นของลิงกังที่เคยทำงานมาตลอดชีวิต

เจ้าของบางคนทิ้งลิงที่ไม่ต้องการแล้วไว้ที่วัด บางคนล่ามไว้ตลอดจนเวลาผ่านไปเป็นเดือน เป็นปี และอีกหลาย ๆ ปี บางคนปล่อยเข้าป่าซึ่งถือเป็นการประหารชีวิตเพราะลิงเลี้ยงเหล่านี้หากินไม่เป็น และไม่รู้วิธีเอาตัวรอดในป่า

แต่สำหรับคิม อ๊อด หมื่น และแสน เจ้าของเลือกทำในสิ่งที่เห็นว่าสมควร นั่นคือการให้โอกาสลิงได้มีชีวิตของพวกเขาอีกครั้ง ที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า หลังจากผ่านระยะกักกันแล้ว ตอนนี้ลิงทั้ง 4 ไม่มีโซ่ล่ามคออีกแล้ว และถูกย้ายไปอยู่กรงใหญ่ พวกเขาจะค่อย ๆ ฟื้นฟูสุขภาพร่างกายและจิตใจในสภาพแวดล้อมใหม่ สุดหล่อทั้ง 4 จะเรียนรู้การเป็นลิงอีกครั้ง

ในอนาคตข้างหน้าเราหวังว่าลิงกังเหล่านี้จะอยู่ร่วมกันเป็นฝูงได้ แต่สภาพจิตใจและการถูกล่ามอยู่ตัวเดียวมาเนิ่นนานนั้นจำเป็นต้องใช้เวลาเยียวยา เราไม่สามารถจะทำสิ่งนี้ให้เกิดขึ้นในระยะเวลาแค่ไม่กี่เดือน

ช่างน่าเศร้าที่ในปัจจุบันประเทศไทยยังคงมีลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าวหลายพันตัวทำงานอยู่ ดังนั้นเราจำเป็นที่จะต้องให้ความรู้แก่เด็กและผู้ใหญ่ว่าการใช้ลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าวนั้นไม่ยุติธรรมต่อสัตว์ เพราะสัตว์ป่าไม่ใช่สัตว์เลี้ยงและลิงเป็นสัตว์สังคม เป็นสัตว์ป่าที่ไม่ควรถูกล่าหรือเพาะพันธุ์เพียงเพื่อจุดประสงค์ในการใช้งาน ขณะนี้มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าร่วมกับบริษัทผลิตและจำหน่ายผลิตภัณฑ์แปรรูปผลิตผลทางการเกษตรเกี่ยวกับมะพร้าวกำลังดำ เนินการแก้ไขและร่วมรับผิดชอบต่อการใช้ลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าวในหลายๆ พื้นที่ของประเทศ

อย่างไรก็ตามหากเจ้าของมีใบอนุญาตครอบครองอย่างถูกต้องการเลี้ยงลิงกังเป็นสิ่งที่กระทำได้ สำหรับการใช้ลิงกังเพื่อการเกษตร ดังนั้นเมื่อกฎหมายนี้มีเปลี่ยนแปลงในอนาคตหรือเจ้าของไม่ต้องการลิงแล้วเท่านั้นเราจึงจะเข้าช่วยเหลือได้ ทางมูลนิธิฯ หวังว่าในอนาคต วัฒนธรรมและวิถีชีวิตการใช้ลิงกังเก็บมะพร้าวจะเลือนลางและหมดไปในที่สุด สัตว์ป่าควรได้รับการปกป้อง มิใช่ถูกแสวงหาประโยชน์อย่างไม่ยุติธรรมเช่นนี้

ณ ตอนนี้มูลนิธิฯ มีรายชื่อลิงกังหลายตัวที่ต้องการความช่วยเหลือจากเรา ในการที่จะช่วยเหลือได้นั้นมูลนิธิฯ จะต้องเตรียมความพร้อมสำหรับกรงที่อยู่ อาหาร ยารักษาเพื่อเลี้ยงดูพวกเขา ไม่อย่างนั้นเราเองก็ไม่สามารถช่วยเหลือเพิ่มได้

ถึงแม้ขณะนี้เราจะช่วยเหลือสัตว์ทุกชีวิตไม่ได้ แต่เราสามารถช่วยเปลี่ยนชีวิตของสัตว์ให้ดีขึ้นได้ ทุก ๆ ตัวต้องการกรงที่อยู่ การดูแล ซึ่งส่วนมากเป็นการดูแลตลอดชีวิต เราได้มามากเท่าไหร่ เราจะช่วยเหลือมากขึ้นเท่านั้น
