Endangered Macaque Badly Injured In Hit-and-Run Dies

A macaque badly injured by a hit-and-run road accident has passed away despite our best efforts to save him at WFFT’s Wildlife Hospital.

The long-tailed macaque had been hit by a vehicle in the nearby area of Khao Tamon. After three days of suffering, villagers eventually caught him and brought the animal to our wildlife hospital.

Our team then carried out a full medical examination and X-ray. His injuries were extensive: he had many wounds all over his body, severe muscular damage, and parts of his skin missing where the bone underneath could be seen. His wounds had become necrotic – rotting – because they had been left several days without treatment. Additionally, his teeth were cracked, his pelvis fractured, and his left foot in need of amputation.

Severely dehydrated and unable to eat food by himself, he needed to be hand fed by our care team with small pieces of chopped banana.

WFFT will always try to fight for each and every animal that needs our help. Sadly in some cases, like this one, the suffering is so severe and there is no path to recovery.

In light of this endangered macaque’s tragic death, WFFT would like to remind our supporters to drive safely and be alert to wildlife. Sadly, traffic accidents are a common part of human-wildlife conflict in Thailand, but we can help prevent them where possible by driving carefully, particularly where populations of urban macaques are known to reside.
