Dumbo’s tale – International Primate Day 2023

On #InternationalPrimateDay, we want to share the story of Dumbo, and the tragic reality of human-wildlife conflict for macaques in Thailand. Back in 2019, a man appeared at the front gate of the WFFT Wildlife Rescue Centre with a tiny little monkey inside a bag. The monkey in question was a very young male Northern pig-tailed macaque, a species now classified as Endangered. The man informed us that his mother was hit by a car and killed. The little macaque was found clinging to his dead mother; the man picked him up and brought him to WFFT.

Luckily, he didn’t have serious injuries and had just a few scratches on his body. The emotional scars of losing his mother were more severe. He was a little confused about his new home and was continuously crying for his mother. We estimated that he was around just 10 days old.

We named him ‘Dumbo’ as his ears were abnormally large for such a little body, although this is normal for infant macaques. He required 24-hour care for a few months.

Thankfully, the person who found him decided against keeping him as a pet. In some ways, Dumbo is a lucky one; we have some primates in our care who were kept as pets in dire conditions for 20 years.

2023 marks Dumbo’s 4th year at WFFT and since his arrival, he has been fully integrated into Bandit’s field and has grown up into an extremely handsome and playful macaque with lots of primate friends who helped him in his rehabilitation journey. Bandit is an incredible foster mother to Dumbo. She has raised dozens of orphaned macaques in her almost 19 years with WFFT. For those of you who don’t know Bandit, she was born with only one arm (with two fingers) and no legs. She is probably the most resilient animal in our care.

ทุกวันนี้เรามีลิงที่ต้องดูแลมากกว่า 170 ตัว และแต่ละตัวมีเรื่องราวของตัวเอง หลายเรื่องราวคือความบอบช้ำจนเป็นเหตุผลที่ลิงทั้งหลายมาอยู่กับเราที่นี่ และเพื่อให้เราจดจำวันนี้ “1 กันยายน วันไพรเมทโลก” เราอยากแบ่งปันเรื่องราวของเจ้า “ดัมโบ้” และความจริงอันน่าเศร้าของความขัดแย้งระหว่างคนและลิงในไทย

ย้อนไปในปี 2562 วันหนึ่งกลางเดือนเมษายน มีชายคนหนึ่งยืนอยู่หน้าประตูทางเข้ามูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า ในมือของชายคนนี้ถือถุงที่มีสิ่งมีชีวิตอยู่ข้างใน เราพบว่าสิ่งนั้นคือ ลิงกังเหนือวัยทารก ตามบัญชีแดงไอยูซีเอ็นถูกจัดอันดับให้เป็น “สิ่งมีชีวิตที่ใกล้สูญพันธุ์” คุณลุงบอกกับเราว่า “แม่มันถูกรถชนตาย” “ลูกมันร้องกอดศพซบอกแม่ไม่ปล่อย ” คุณลุงรู้สึกหดหู่และสงสารจึงนำส่งให้เราช่วยเหลือ

โชคดีที่ลิงน้อยมีบาดแผลถลอกเพียงเล็กน้อย แต่แผลทางใจจากการสูญเสียแม่นั้นรุนแรงกว่า ลิงน้อยงุนงงกับบ้านใหม่และยังคงร้องหาแม่อยู่ตลอดเวลา นั่นเพราะลูกลิงตัวนี้มีอายุประมาณ 10 วันเท่านั้น ฟันทารกยังไม่ขึ้นเลย ในช่วงเดือนแรก ๆ ของการเป็นลิงน้อย เจ้าตัวเล็กได้รับการดูแลตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง

เราตั้งชื่อให้ว่า “ดัมโบ้” ตัวเล็กหูใหญ่ใช่เลย (ถึงแม้ว่าลิงทารกจะมีลักษณะเช่นนี้ก็เถอะ) ต้องขอขอบคุณ คุณลุงผู้ช่วยชีวิต สำหรับการตัดสินใจนำส่งให้เราดูแล และไม่ได้ต้องการที่จะนำไปเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง โชคดีของดัมโบ้มาก ๆ เพราะที่ศูนย์ของเราลิงบางตัวเคยเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงพบเจอสภาพชีวิตที่ย้ำแย่มาเป็น 10 ปี 20 ปี
