Today, on #WorldOtterDay, please give and help Oreo and Bacon. They need you. 

Meet Bacon and Oreo, two unwanted pet otters recently handed over to WFFT. The otters had been kept for around six years before the owner decided they needed a better, more suitable home. They are both males and are inseparable even though they are completely different species.

Bacon is an Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) and Oreo is a Hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana). Both species are at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and poaching.

To our knowledge, Oreo is one of only two of his species alive in legal captivity!

WFFT now provides sanctuary to 24 otters. Without your support, we cannot rescue and care for so many otters. With every new arrival, we must provide them with a special, species-specific home, diet and care.

We are calling on you, our friends, to please help us help them. We will need around $3,000 to help Bacon and Oreo. Can you please help these rare animals get the second chance and life-long care they need?

The hairy-nosed otter is one of the rarest otter species. Until 1998, it was thought to have been extinct, but small populations have been discovered since then. Extremely few individuals of this species survive in Vietnam, southern Thailand, Sumatra and Cambodia. There is no population estimate of the Hairy-nosed otter across its range. Based on past and ongoing threats faced by the species throughout its distribution, it is suspected that the species may have suffered a population reduction of more than 50% over the past 30 years. Otters are hunted for the illegal wildlife trade in pelt, and also for their meat, as pets, and for medical use in Southeast Asia. Throughout its range, the Hairy-nosed otter is under increasing pressure from intensive poaching, evident from the seizures of pelts (IUCN 2020).

นากจมูกขน คือหนึ่งในสายพันธุ์ของนากที่หาได้ยากที่สุดจนกระทั่งปี 2541 ที่เราเชื่อกันว่ามันได้สูญพันธุ์ไปแล้ว แต่หลังจากนั้นก็ได้มีการค้นพบประชากรของนากสายพันธุ์นี้เป็นกลุ่มเล็กๆในภายหลัง แต่ทว่าเรายังสามารถพบเห็นนากสายพันธุ์นี้แม้จะค้นหาได้ยากและน้อยมากๆใน เวียดนาม ทางตอนใต้ของไทย เกาะสุมาตรา และ กัมพูชา เราไม่สามารถประมาณการจำนวนของนากจมูกขนที่แน่นอนได้ เนื่องจากภัยคุกคามต่อสายพันธุ์นี้อย่างต่อเนื่องในอดีต มีการคาดการณ์ว่าสายพันธุ์นี้ประสบกับการสูญเสียของประชากรไปกว่า 50% ในช่วง 30 ปี ที่ผ่านมา. ตัวนากนั้นถูกล่าเพื่อการค้าอย่างผิดกฎหมาย โดยการล่าเพื่อเอาขน, เนื้อ และ เพื่อใช้ในทางการแพทย์ หรือแม้แต่ล่าเพื่อเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงของทางเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และในตลอดระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมา นากจมูกขนนั้นอยู่ในความเสี่ยงจากการล่าที่เพิ่มมากขึ้นโดยเห็นได้ชัดเจนจากการตรวจยึดหนังสัตว์จำนวนมาก (IUCN 2020)
