Specialist treatment for rescued elephant, Alicia

Hope for Alicia regaining some sight following a specialist visit. ภาษาไทยด้านล่าง

Alicia, one of our beautiful old girls, has been struggling with chronic eye problems. When she arrived at WFFT in 2017, she was already blind in one eye. Recently, issues developed with her good eye, raising concerns about potential permanent blindness. To assess her eye health, our wildlife vet team collaborated with an expert veterinary ophthalmologist and his colleague from Mahasarakham Technical College.

Before conducting necessary checks, Alicia had to be sedated. After a while, we heard her snoring, indicating deep sleep and unawareness of the procedure.

Our team placed her on a saline drip and took blood samples. To perform an ultrasound scan (ultrasonography), her eyes had to be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and sand—a delicate process involving saline eye wash to flush out her eye socket.

The eye she is already blind in is covered by a thick layer of cataract. Her other eye has a corneal ulcer and is inflamed. The ophthalmologist’s diagnosis gives us hope. Her retina is undamaged, and with medication, there is a chance to reverse the decline.

Despite limited eyesight, Alicia still ventures into the spacious enclosure and swims in lakes next to the eco-lodge with her old lady friends, including Malai Ngun. With her friends by her side, she remains a confident and dominant elephant, often communicating with them in a low, rumbling sound.

Before WFFT, Alicia endured about six years of labour in a trekking camp, giving rides to tourists. Previously, she served as a logging elephant, likely captured from a wild herd in Myanmar. Most of her long life involved suffering at the hands of humans, working long days under fear and intimidation.

Upon arriving at WFFT, Alicia was in bad shape with many injuries. Thanks to supporters like you, she has enjoyed six years of freedom. We hope she has many more with us.

ถึงสายตาจะไม่ค่อยดี แต่อลิเซียก็ยังรักที่จะเดินเล่นและว่ายน้ำในสระใกล้ๆกับที่พัก eco-lodge ด้วยกันกับเพื่อนของเธอ มาลัยเงิน เพราะได้เพื่อนเป็นที่พึ่ง อลิเซียจึงรู้สึกสบายใจขึ้น และทั้งสองมักจะพูดคุยเสียงดังกันตลอดเวลา

ก่อนที่อลิเซียจะเข้ามาอยู่ในมูลนิธิ อลิเซียโดนบังคับให้ทำงานอยู่ในแคมป์ที่เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวมากว่า 6 ปี นอกจากให้นักท่องเที่ยวขี่หลังแล้ว ยังต้องทำงานลากซุงอีกด้วย และช้างเหล่านี้ส่วนใหญ่เป็นช้างป่าที่ถูกจับมาจากประเทศเมียนมาร์ อลิเซียต้องทำงานอย่างเหน็ดเหนื่อยตลอดทั้งวันภายใต้การบังคับขู่เข็ญจากผู้คุม

เมื่อมาถึงมูลนิธิ WFFT อลิเซียตกอยู่ในสภาพไม่ค่อยสู้ดีนัก มีบาดแผลหลายแห่งตามร่างกาย แต่ก็ต้องขอบคุณผู้ร่วมสนับสนุนและบริจาคทุกท่าน ที่ทำให้เธอค่อยๆลิ้มรสความเป็นอิสระตลอดช่วง 6 ปีที่ผ่านมา เราหวังว่าเธอจะคงอยู่ต่อกับเราไปอีกนานๆ
