Rescued – Ozzi The Osprey

Last week, we welcomed a rather rare patient, “Ozzi” the osprey (Pandion haliaetus) who had been found on the ground in a pineapple farm in Phetchaburi. Fortunately, a good citizen found him and immediately brought him to the WFFT Wildlife Rescue Centre.

At first, we assumed Ozzi had a broken bone, but an x-ray showed no sign of a fracture. Therefore the Vet Team did a blood test, the result indicates that Ozzi is infected with avian malaria. A common and possibly life threatening disease, luckily the infection appears to be mild so with the proper treatment he may recover.

After close observation and treatment for a week, Ozzi’s condition did not improve. The WFFT Vet Team decided to contact our fellow wildlife rescuers at Kasetsart University Raptor Rehabilitation Unit (Specialist in bird of prey/raptor) to assist and rehabilitate Ozzi. They were more than happy to help. Ozzie is now receiving the best care in Thailand and we hope he will make a full recovery.

Through collaboration, we can save more of Thailand’s wildlife. We will keep you posted about Ozzi’s condition!

สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเรายินดีต้อนรับสมาชิกชั่วคราว ออสซี่ เหยี่ยวออสเปร (Osprey) บินตกลงมาที่สวนสับปะรดเเห่งหนึ่งในเพชรบุรี โชคดีที่มีพลเมืองดีมาพบเข้าเเละรีบนำมาส่งที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า

จากสันนิษฐานเเรกทีมสัตวเเพทย์คาดว่าปีกของมันน่าจะหัก เเต่ X-ray กลับไม่พบรอยหักใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น จึงส่งผลเลือดไปตรวจเเละพบว่า ออสซี่มีเชื้อของโรคมาลาเรียซึ่งเป็นโรคที่พบบ่อยและอาจเป็นอันตรายถึงชีวิต โชคดีที่อาการติดเชื้อดูเหมือนจะไม่รุนแรงดังนั้นหากได้รับการรักษาที่ถูกต้องอาจจะหายได้

หลังจากเฝ้าดูอาการเเละรักษาอย่างใกล้ชิดเป็นเวลา 1 อาทิตย์ อาการของ ออส ยังไม่ดีขึ้น ทีมสัตวเเพทย์จึงตัดสินใจติดต่อเพื่อขอความร่วมมือจาก สพ.ญ.รติวรรณ สิทธิบุตร์ หน่วยฟื้นฟูนกล่าเหยื่อ มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านนกล่าเหยื่อ/นกนักล่าโดยเฉพาะ เพื่อฟื้นฟู ออส ให้เเข็งเเรงเเละปล่อยคืนสู่ธรรมชาติต่อไป ขอบคุณหน่วยฟื้นฟูนกล่าเหยื่อ มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ อีกครั้งนะครับ
