Rescued – Two Ex-pets Infant Civet

The keeping of wildlife as pets is driving many species to the edge of extinction. It also leads to very poor welfare of the animals that are being kept captive. Here is a prime example of health problems caused by keeping wild animals as pets.

Meet “Lek & Klang“ two Asian palm civets that were caught from the wild as infants and kept as pets. After 3 months their health problems became visible. Lek’s suffered a perineal hernia, so the owner decided to contact WFFT for help.

But the problem did not end there; the WFFT Vet Team noticed they were walking oddly so performed an x-ray. The x-ray revealed that both Lek & Klang have a severe case of metabolic bone disease (MBD), a widespread illness in wild animals kept as pets. MBD is caused by improper nutrition, calcium deficiency, and vitamin D deficiency. In this case, Lek & Klang have deformed bones, with numerous small fractures, which makes it difficult for them to walk.

The Vet Team performed surgery on Lek to fixed the hernia, the surgery went well. Lek & Klang will receive specialist care and a new diet. We do not know yet if they will recover from the very bad start to life.

การนำสัตว์ป่ามาเลี้ยงในวิถีชีวิตเดียวกับมนุษย์นั้นถือว่าเป็นการทำลายระบบนิเวศน์อย่างหนึ่งเเละอาจจะส่งผลเสียต่อสุขภาพของสัตว์อีกด้วยหากผู้เลี้ยงไม่ศึกษาข้อมูลอย่างถี่ถ้วนอย่างเช่นเคสที่กำลังจะพูดถึงนี้

พบกับ เล็ก เเละ กลาง พี่น้องอีเห็น(Asian Palm Civet)ที่ถูกนำเอามาเลี้ยงจากป่า เเต่หลังจากดูเเลไปได้ 3 เดือน “เล็ก” เกิดอาการลำไส้ไหลตรงรูทวารหนัก เจ้าของจึงนำมาที่มูลนิธิฯ เพื่อดูอาการ เเละหาบ้านหลังใหม่ให้ทั้งสอง

เเต่ปัญหาไม่ได้หมดเเค่ตรงนั้น ทีมสัตวเเพทย์ได้เห็นอาการผิดปกติทางร่างกายของทั้งคู่ จึงได้นำเข้าตรวจเครื่อง X-ray ผลปรากฏว่าทั้ง 2 เป็นโรคกระดูกเมตาบอลิกหรือโรคกระดูกพรุน ซึ่งเป็นโรคที่พบได้บ่อยในการนำสัตว์ป่ามาเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง ส่วนใหญ่เกิดจากสัตว์ที่ไม่ได้รับสารอาหาร วิตามิน หรือเเสงเเดดที่เหมาะสม อย่างในเคสนี้ทำให้กระดูกของ เล็ก เเละ กลาง เบี้ยว ไม่สามารถเดินได้อย่างปกติ หรือหากเดินก็จะเจ็บกระดูก

เบื้องต้นทีมสัตวเเพทย์ได้ดันเเละเย็บเเผลของ “เล็ก” ให้กลับเข้าสู่ในช่องทวารหนัก ในส่วนของโรคกระดูกพรุนของทั้ง 2 ทีมสัตวเเพทย์จะทำการปรับอาหารเเละดูเเลอย่างเหมาะสมเพื่อเพิ่มคุณภาพชีวิตให้ทั้ง 2 ต่อไป
