สัปดาห์นี้เรายินดีต้อนรับสมาชิกใหม่ สจ๊วต เเละ ลิตเติ้ล สองพี่น้องอ้นใหญ่ (Large bamboo rat) หลังจากที่ถูกเลี้ยงเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงมานานหลายปี

เจ้าของได้เปิดเผยว่าได้ขอซื้อชีวิต สจ๊วต เเละ ลิตเติ้ล ไว้เมื่อ 7 ปีก่อนจากการถูกทำเป็นอาหารจึงเลี้ยงตั้งเเต่นั้นมา เจ้าของมีความหวังดีอยากให้เจ้าสองตัวนี้ไปอยู่ที่พักพิงเเห่งใหม่จึงได้ติดต่อมายังมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า หลังจากตรวจสุขภาพทีมสัตว์เเพทย์พบว่าสจ๊วตมีอาการฟันงอกที่ผิดรูปจึงจำเป็นต้องตกเเต่งเพื่อให้สจ๊วตเคี้ยวอาหารได้สะดวกขึ้น

ประเทศไทยมีอ้น 3 ชนิดได้เเก่ อ้นเล็ก อ้นกลาง เเละอ้นใหญ่ เป็นสัตว์ที่อาศัยอยู่ใต้ดินหรือโพรงไม้ออกหากินตอนกลางคืน กินรากไผ่ และ หน่อไม้ เป็นอาหารหลักซึ่งในประเทศไทยมีกฎหมายเป็นสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองแต่ก็เป็นที่นิยมรับประทานของผู้คนในบางพื้นที่

After spending many years in captivity two Large Bamboo Rat’s (Rhizomys sumatrensis) were handed over to WFFT a few days ago. We have named them Stuart and Little.

The owner told us he recused them from villagers who were going to eat them seven years ago; he raised them ever since. He felt he needed a more suitable home and so he decided to bring them to us. After the initial health check, the Vet Team found Stuart had overgrown teeth, so it was necessary to trim it; otherwise, she will have a hard time chewing food and become infected over time.

In Thailand, we have three species of the bamboo rat (Rhizomys, Cannomys, and Tachyoryctes). They are nocturnal and live in underground burrows during the daytime. They predominantly eat bamboo, that is where their name comes from. All species of bamboo rat are protected under Thailand’s Wild Animals Preservation and Protection Act. Despite this, they are commonly hunted and farmed for food.
