Bi-Annual Health Check Time for Cola, the Malayan Sun Bear

Aging bears need a little extra TLC. And at around 26 years old, Cola needs regular dental work and nail trimmings to stay happy and healthy. A few days ago, she was sedated for her 6-monthly treatment, during which our team did a routine health check that also included blood tests. The vet team trimmed her nails and scaled her teeth and as soon as she woke up, she went back to her spacious enclosure and enjoyed her dinner of delicious sweet corn, bananas, papaya, and watermelon.

Cola was rescued in early 2005 from a temple in Chanthaburi after spending 8 years with two other bears in a concrete pit. At WFFT she enjoys a much bigger space in a field with climbing trees and platforms. When she arrived at WFFT, Cola was really suffering from stress. Like many of our rescued animals, Cola was fed a bad diet before she joined us, and in 2012 she needed a great deal of dental work to feel better. All thanks to our supporters, she has lived a better life in our sanctuary for 18 years now!

The Malayan Sun Bear is the smallest of all bear species. They are found in the tropical forests of South East Asia and are known for being excellent climbers – they love to sleep in trees and here at WFFT, we often see them sleep on the platforms high above the ground. Being omnivores, their natural diet is a combination of ants, bees, termites and several types of fruits and plants. To reach into termite hills and get honey from beehives (their favourite), they are equipped with long tongues.

หมีอายุมากส่วนใหญ่ต้องได้รับการตรวจเช็คสุขภาพร่างกายอย่างละเอียด อย่างโคล่าในวัย 25 ปี ต้องเข้ารับการรักษาฟัน และตัดเล็บที่ยาวมากเกินไปออก เพื่อให้ใช้ชีวิตได้สะดวกขึ้น หลายวันมานี้ โคล่าต้องเข้ารับการรักษาอีกครั้ง ซึ่งเป็นการรักษาที่มีทุกๆ 6 เดือน มีทั้งการตรวจเลือด ตัดเล็บ ทำฟัน เสร็จแล้วก็ได้กลับบ้านพร้อมจัดมื้อเย็นชุดใหญ่เป็นข้าวโพดหวาน กล้วย มะละกอ และแตงโม

โคล่าได้รับการช่วยเหลือมาจากวัดหนึ่งในจังหวัดจันทบุรีตั้งแต่ปี 2548 หลังพบว่าอยู่กับหมีอีก 2 ตัวในรั้วคอนกรีตกว่า 8 ปี เมื่อมาถึงมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า โคล่าก็ได้มีพื้นที่กว้างขวางเต็มไปด้วยต้นไม้ใบหญ้าเป็นของตัวเอง ทั้งๆที่ตอนย้ายมาครั้งแรก โคล่าดูเครียดและเจ็บปวดมาก เป็นผลจากการได้รับอาหารที่ไม่เหมาะสมมาก่อน จนกระทั่งในปี 2555 โคล่าได้รับการรักษาฟันครั้งแรกจนอาการดีขึ้นมาก ต้องขอขอบคุณผู้บริจาคสนับสนุนทุกๆคน ที่ทำให้ชีวิตเจ้าโคล่าสุขสบายตลอด 18 ปีที่อยู่ที่นี่

หมีหมาเป็นหมีที่มีขนาดเล็กที่สุดในบรรดาหมีทุกสายพันธุ์ มักพบเจอได้ในป่าไม้เขตร้อนทางเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และเป็นที่รู้จักกันในเรื่องของนักปีนป่าย เพราะเป็นหมีที่ชอบปีนขึ้นไปนอนบนต้นไม้ ที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าแห่งนี้ ก็มักพบเห็นหมีพวกนี้นอนอยู่เหนือพื้นตลอด และเนื่องจากเป็นสัตว์ที่กินทั้งเนื้อและพืช อาหารตามธรรมชาติจึงเป็น มด ผึ้ง ปลวก และผลไม้อีกหลายชนิด และยังมีลิ้นที่ยาวมากเพื่อใช้ในการตวัดหาปลวกในรังปลวก หรือ เอื้อมเอาน้ำผึ้งในรังผึ้ง
