World Chimpanzee Day 2021 – Canoe’s tale

Chimpanzees are listed as endangered, and wild populations are declining. Their habitats are decreasing due to deforestation and degradation, they are hunted for bushmeat, and they are stolen from the wild and sold in the illegal wildlife trade.

The latter is Canoe’s tragic story…

He was poached from the wild as an infant back in the 1980s: most likely he saw his family get murdered in front of him. Then, he was put on a plane, or boat and sold to the highest bidder in Thailand. 

Afterwards, he spent more than 30 years locked up, in a metal cage, all alone, in a busy city. This is a far cry from the life he should have had, living in the wild surrounded by other chimpanzees. It is hard to imagine the ordeal he has been through and the terribly sad life he has led. Finally, after many years of trying, WFFT managed to free Canoe from his prison in 2020 and bring him to WFFT for a chance at some kind of happiness. 

Whilst Canoe will sadly never know life as a wild chimpanzee, he now lives on an open-air island: he can run, climb, forage and re-discover his chimpanzee instincts, which were robbed from him when he was ruthlessly taken from the wild. 

Only together can we secure a future for wildlife. We must stand together to say no to the illegal wildlife trade – for every wild species. In short, no wild animal belongs in a home or to be exploited for human gain. The animals at WFFT are only here because they are victims of the wildlife trade and cannot be released, or they are too old or sick to survive in the wild. 

What can you do?

Do not like social media accounts with wild animals kept as pets. Do not visit entertainment venues with wild animal performances (boxing, dancing, cycling, etc). Refrain from taking selfies and photos with wild animals. Report the illegal use of wildlife to the authorities. Finally, please consider doing something to make a difference on World Chimpanzee Day by making a donation to WFFT – for our amazing boy, Canoe.

และพิเศษกว่านั้น เพื่อร่วมฉลองให้กับ “แคนู” ลิงชิมแปนซีผู้เข้มแข็งที่มูลนิธิฯช่วยเหลือมากับชีวิตที่ดีในปัจจุบัน

ลิงชิมแปนซี เป็นสัตว์ที่ถูกจัดอยู่ในบัญชี “สิ่งมีชีวิตที่ใกล้การสูญพันธุ์” ประชากรลิงชิมแปนซีในธรรมชาติลดลงอย่างน่าวิตกเพราะพื้นที่อาศัยลดลงเนื่องจากการรุกรานและทำลายป่าของมนุษย์ การล่าเป็นอาหาร การลักลอบล่าลูกชิมแปนซีเพื่อนำไปขายในตลาดค้าสัตว์ป่า ดังเช่น เรื่องราวชีวิตอันน่าเศร้าของแคนู

น่าเศร้าใจยิ่งนักกับเรื่องราวของแคนู ย้อนกลับไปเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2523 ลูกลิงชิมแปนซีอย่างแคนูถูกล่าออกมาจากป่า และมีความเป็นไปได้มากที่แคนูจะเห็นเหตุการณ์ที่ครอบครัว พ่อ แม่ พี่ น้องของตนถูกฆ่า เมื่อนำแคนูออกมาจากป่าแล้วแคนูจะถูกขายและขนย้ายโดยเครื่องบินหรือเรือจนมาถึงเมืองไทยและส่งต่อให้กับพ่อค้าสัตว์รายใหญ่ต่อไป

ทั้ง ๆ ที่เป็นสัตว์สังคม ชิมแปนซีอย่างแคนูกลับต้องใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในกรงเหล็กแคบ ๆ ตัวเดียวมานานกว่า 30 ปี ในเมืองกรุง ไม่ได้ใช้ชีวิตในป่ากับชิมแปนซีตัวอื่น ๆในป่าดังที่ควรจะเป็น ยากเกินกว่าที่เราจะจินตนาการว่าชีวิตก่อนหน้านี้แคนูพบเจอกับอะไรมาบ้าง อย่างไรก็ตามหลังจากที่เราพยายามอยู่หลายปี ท้ายที่สุดมูลนิธิฯ ก็สามารถเข้าช่วยเหลือแคนูเพื่อนำมาดูแลต่อได้สำเร็จในปี 2563 

ถึงแม้ว่าแคนูจะไม่มีวันได้รู้จักชีวิตในป่าที่แท้จริงเหมือนชิมแปนซีที่อยู่ตามธรรมชาติตัวอื่นๆ  แต่แคนูในวันนี้มีโอกาสใช้ชีวิตอยู่บนเกาะชิมแปนชี เกาะที่มีพื้นที่ให้แคนูได้ วิ่ง ปืน หาอาหาร ซ่อนแอบ รวมถึงเรียนรู้และค้นพบพฤติกรรมตามสัญชาติญาณของชิมแปนซีอีกครั้ง ซึ่งพฤติกรรมเหล่านี้ได้หายไปตั้งแต่แคนูถูกล่าออกมาจากป่า 

การร่วมมือกันเท่านั้นจึงจะทำให้ชีวิตและอนาคตของสัตว์ป่ามีความมั่นคงได้ เราจะต้องยืดหยันและต่อสู้ร่วมกันเพื่อต่อต้านการค้าสัตว์ป่าเพื่อรักษาสัตว์ป่าทุกชนิดให้คงอยู่กับป่า ไม่ควรมีสัตว์ป่าตัวไหนต้องกลายเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงของมนุษย์ ไม่ควรมีสัตว์ป่าตัวไหนถูกแสวงหาผลประโยชน์ทางธุรกิจเพื่อผลประโยชน์ของมนุษย์ สัตว์ป่าที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าก็เช่นกันทุกตัวเคยเป็นเหยื่อของการค้าสัตว์ป่ามาก่อน และส่วนใหญ่ไม่สามารถปล่อยกลับคืนสู่ป่าได้เนื่องจากอาจมีโรคประจำตัว มีอาการป่วย หรืออายุมากจนไม่สามารถอยู่รอดได้ในป่า 

เราทุกคนช่วยกันปกป้องและคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่าได้โดย ✅ โทรแจ้งหรือรายงานต่อเจ้าหน้าที่เมื่อพบเห็นการค้าสัตว์ป่าผิดกฎหมาย

❌ ไม่สนับสนุน ไม่รับชม ไม่กดไลค์ ไม่กดแชร์ สื่อสังคมออนไลน์ต่าง ๆ ที่ผู้ใช้สื่อส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงสัตว์ป่าเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง  

❌ ไม่สนับสนุนเข้าเยี่ยมชมสถานที่ที่ใช้สัตว์ป่าเพื่อความบันเทิงเช่นสัตว์ชกมวยสัตว์แสดงสัตว์ปั่นจักรยานและไม่ถ่ายรูปคู่กับสัตว์ป่า

และท้ายสุดท่านสามารถร่วมเป็นพลังแห่งการเปลี่ยนแปลงให้แก่สัตว์ป่าในวันชิมแปนซีโลก โดยการช่วยเหลือบริจาคให้กับมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า เพื่อชิมแปนซี เพื่อแคนู เพื่อสัตว์ป่าทุกตัวที่เป็นเหยื่อถูกล่าออกมาจากป่า
