What happens to unwanted Coconut Monkeys?

What do we say to man who brings a monkey chained to the back of his car to hand over to us, as the monkey is not capable of collecting coconuts? Sorry we are full we don’t have enough space to house more primates? No we do not. We make space with the little we have. Luckily we had one vacant enclosure in quarantine where he can be temporarily housed. We have lists of animals awaiting rescue and we have to turn many away as we literally cannot house them. The influx of unwanted animals, ex-pets, unwanted work animals, or those dumped at temples, does not slow down. We are in desperate need of funds to build more habitats for unwanted macaques like this handsome boy, ‘Kim’.

‘Kim’ is an adult male Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, a dangerous wild animal, who was poached from the wild as an infant and sold on to be trained as a coconut monkey. His current owner has only had him for 3 months after purchasing him for 3000 THB from a coconut monkey dealer in the south of Thailand. Coconut monkeys are trained from a young age to climb trees and collect coconuts. The farm owner then pays the owner of the monkey around 3 thb per coconut; a well-trained monkey may harvest 200-700 coconuts a day. Kim refused to do what his owner asked of him, he would not harvest coconuts hence why he is no longer wanted. Unwanted animals like this are often dumped at temples, left on a chain for years, or let go in a forest area, often resulting in a death sentence. Luckily for Kim, his owner knew about WFFT’s rescue work and knew that we help all wild animals we can so brought him in.

Macaques are highly social animals; here at WFFT we re-socialize these poor souls with their own species. Ideally this is done in large open fields where they have space to play, climb and sleep high in the trees under the stars, and once again have some kind of freedom. Sadly we are not in a position to help more as we have no more space to suitably house them.

This morning the vile steal collar that was imbedded within Kim’s neck was removed, we performed an x ray, and ran blood checks. Chains or metal collars are permanently fixed onto coconut monkey’s necks to prevent them from escaping. They are then confined by a long rope or lead, which is used when they climb up tall coconut trees. Other than being under weight and malnourished, Kim seems in relatively good physical health. His mental health we be assessed in the coming days, years of solitary confinement often leaves lifelong scars on these poor animals.

With the support of our visitors, volunteers and donors we would not be able to help animals like Kim. So thank you to those who have contributed to WFFT’s successes. ชีวิตของลิงกังขึ้นมะพร้าวที่หมดประโยชน์

คุณลุงคนหนึ่งพารถมาจอดข้างในมูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่า ท้ายกระบะมีลิงกังถูกล่ามไว้ ลุงบอกกับเราว่า ผมเอามาให้ เพราะตัวนี้มันเก็บมะพร้าวไม่ได้ ไม่มีประโยชน์ เราจะบอกคุณลุงได้มั้ยว่าคุณลุงครับ เราไม่มีพื้นที่เหลือเลย แน่นอนเราทำแบบนั้นไม่ได้ เราจึงช่วยเท่าที่เราทำได้ โชคดีที่เรายังมีกรงเล็ก ๆ ในกักกันให้ได้พออยู่ชั่วคราวไปก่อน

มีตารางช่วยเหลือสัตว์อีกยาวเหยียด ที่รอมูลนิธิฯ เข้าช่วยเหลือ บางรายทางเราจำเป็นต้องปฏิเสธเพราะกรงไม่พอ พื้นที่ไม่พอเลย ท่านมองเห็นกันรึบ้างเปล่าว่าปัญหาปานปลายของสัตว์ที่ท่านกำลังทิ้งเพราะหมดค่า หมดประโยชน์ ที่ถูกนำไปทิ้งที่วัดเป็นภาระให้กับวัด เหตุการณ์เหล่านี้ไม่เคยหายไปไหน ทำให้ทางมูลนิธิฯเองมีความจำเป็นที่จะขอระดมทุนเพื่อสร้างที่อยู่ใหม่ให้กับลิงกังที่ชื่อว่า คิม ตัวนี้

“คิม” เป็นลิงกังเหนือเพศผู้ ที่ถูกล่ามาจากป่าตั้งแต่เด็กและขายเพื่อฝึกให้เป็นลิงกังขึ้นมะพร้าว คุณลุงบอกเราว่า ซื้อคิมมาในราคา 3,000 บาท จากเจ้าของเก่าทางภาคใต้และอยู่กับลุงได้ประมาณ 3 เดือน แต่คิมขึ้นมะพร้าวไม่เป็นเลย ลิงกังขึ้นมะพร้าวนั้นจะถูกฝึกให้ขึ้นมะพร้าวตั้งแต่ยังเป็นลิงเด็ก เจ้าของสวนมะพร้าวจะจ่ายให้เจ้าของลิงตามจำนวนที่ลิงเก็บมะพร้าวได้ โดยให้ราคาลูกละ 3 บาท ลิงที่ฝึกขึ้นจนชำนาญจะเก็บมะพร้าวได้วันละประมาณ 200-700ลูก แต่คิมทำไม่ได้เลย แล้วคิมจะมีประโยชน์อะไร โชคดีของเจ้าคิมน้อย ที่ถึงแม้คุณลุงจะไม่ต้องการคิม แต่ก็ยังพาคิมมาให้ที่มูลนิธิฯ เพราะรู้ว่าเราจะช่วยเหลือคิมได้ เพราะส่วนมากแล้วสัตว์เลี้ยงที่เจ้าของไม่ต้องการ มักจะถูกนำไปทิ้งไว้ที่วัด ถูกล่ามโซ่ อาศัยอาหาร หรือข้าวเหลือจากวัด จากคนที่เดินผ่านไปมา ไม่มีการดูแลที่ถูกต้อง ซ้ำร้ายบางตัวถูกปล่อยเข้าป่าโดยที่หากินเองไม่เป็น หรืออาจจะถูกกัดจนตายจากฝูงอื่นๆ ที่เป็นเจ้าถิ่น

ลิงเป็นสัตว์สังคม ที่มูลนิธิฯ หลังจากที่เราช่วยเหลือลิงชนิดต่าง ๆ มาแล้ว ลิงที่น่าสงสารเหล่านี้จะค่อย ๆ ปรับสภาพและเรียนรู้การอยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูงอีกครั้ง เพราะนั้นคือชีวิตที่ควรจะเป็น ลิงที่เราช่วยเหลือจะได้อยู่ในสนามลิงใหญ่ ที่ซึ่งพวกเค้าจะวิ่งได้ ปืนและนอนต้นยอดไม้สูง เหมือนได้รับอิสรภาพอีกครั้ง เช้านี้ทางเราได้ตัดโซ่ที่รัดแน่นจนเนื้อหนังคอหุ้มโซ่ไว้ เอ็กเรย์ และตรวจเลือด คิมถือว่ามีสุขภาพร่ายกายที่ดี เพราะส่วนมากแล้วลิงเลี้ยงมักจะผอม และขาดสารอาหาร ส่วนสุขภาพจิตใจของคิมนั้น ทางเราจะประเมินได้ในอีกสองสามวัน เพราะบ่อยครั้งที่สัตว์ถูกกักขังตัวเดียวเป็นเวลานานหลาย ปี ส่งผลทางจิตใจเป็นอย่างมาก

ทั้งนี้ทางมูลนิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าขอขอบคุณสำหรับการบริจาค แรงสนับสนุนจากผู้บริจาค อาสาสมัคร และผู้เยี่ยมชม คือส่วนสำคัญในความสำเร็จของเรา ท่านทำให้เราสามารถช่วยเหลือสัตว์เหล่านี้ รวมถึง “คิม” แต่ปัญหาเหล่านี้ไม่ได้จบแค่ชั่วข้ามคืน ยังมีชีวิตของสัตว์ป่าอีกมากมายที่รอคอยความช่วยเหลือจากเราอยู่ มูลนิธิฯ ยังต้องสร้างที่อยู่ให้กับสัตว์ที่ไม่เป็นที่ต้องการเหล่านั้น ท่านจะช่วยเราบริจาคได้หรือไม่ มากหรือน้อยเรายินดี มูลนิธิฯ หวังแค่เพียงเราจะมีทุนสนับสนุนมากพอที่จะสร้างสนามลิงใหม่ ให้กับลิงกังที่ถูกถอดทิ้งอย่างคิม

ณ ตอนนี้คิมจะไม่ถูกล่ามโซ่หรือถูกบังคับให้ทำงานอีกต่อไป ในอีกไม่กี่เดือนข้างหน้าคิมจะเป็นอย่างไรใครจะรู้ได้ ลิงที่ถูกนำมาเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงจะมีอายุขัยประมาณ 25 ปี ทางมูลนิธิฯ จะดูแลหนึ่งชีวิตนี้ให้ดีที่สุดต่อไป แต่หากท่านผู้เลี้ยงยั้งคิดสักนิดก่อนจะนำสัตว์ป่ามาเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง หรือไว้ใช้งาน ในกระบวนการเหล่านั้น หนึ่งชีวิตนั้นจะต้องพบเจอกับการทารุณอย่างไรบ้าง
