Rescued fishing cats at WFFT moved

More space and trees to climb!

WFFT has rescued 7 fishing cats over the last few years, 1 has died right after rescue, 3 where donated to the Department of National Parks for a breeding program, while 3 more have stayed at WFFT awaiting release or a government breeding program.

For the three awaiting their next fate, good news has come in the last month. They have all 3 moved in together into a large enclosure at the WFFT wildlife rescue center where they can run around, bathe in a large pool or climb the large forest trees as they please. One of the fishing cats has already taken the highest branch of a fig tree as his new sleeping location during the days, in a place with good cover against the sun and a cool breeze passing by.

Especially for “Jumbo” this was a great day. Jumbo was recently rescued from a farmers home where he was kept in a 3×3 meter cage without any sunshine, water or enrichments. He was carefully checking out his new environment not knowing what to do with all this space. On the second day we actually thought he had escaped from his new home as we couldn’t find him, three days later he was found sleeping under the bushes in the middle of the enclosure, being in top-condition, not wanting to see any humans!

For Jumbo it was strange to see his two fellow fishing cats in his new home, Jumbo lived alone for 4 years, but very soon he started to interact with the other 2 cats and was seen swimming in the pool a few days later together with “Tong Teng” looking for some small fish to catch and eat.
