The Illegal Otter Trade
This video features Harriette, our latest otter rescue, and information on the alarming rise of poaching otters for the fur and pet industries.
An off-road biker stumbled upon Harriette on a remote jungle trail in Koh Phangan, alone in a cage without shade, water, or food. He released her from the cage but she followed him! Realizing she was probably an abandoned pet, he then brought her to an animal clinic but was dismayed when they were apathetic, informing him that otters are commonly sold for 10,000 baht. He didn’t give up, however, and ended up at another clinic which thankfully reached out to WFFT. We are grateful to the many folks who came together to give Harriette a better future with our other rescued otters!
